Breath of Life

From William Law, Spirit of Prayer:

“My own good Spirit is the Breath of God in me, and so related to God, as the Breath of my animal Life is related to the Air, or Spirit of this outward World. It is from God, has the Nature, the Eternity, the Spirituality of God, as the Breath of my Flesh and Blood, has the Grossness, the earthly, transitory Nature of the Spirit of this World. And as all my Communication with this World arises from the Breath of this World, kindled in my own Life, so all my possibility of Communication with God, arises solely from the Breath of his Holy Spirit brought forth in the Life of my Soul; and I can only live in God, by his Spirit having a Birth in me, as I can only live in this World, by having its Spirit born in me.”

Thinking about theses processes.....

Air of this world that is necessary for most, if not all creatures to live in this world and....

The Breath of God biblically found to be breathed into created man to have Life.

The question immediately pops to mind is....

What is life? ...and what does it have to do with “air” as humanity understands it and “spirit” as biblically understood.

Trying to catch this thought....

Spiritual life is conceived by the Breath of God in humanity.

That Life was lost when Adam turned from dependence on God for Life and began to draw breath independently from the world. That turning to human independence resulted a union with the creation and a separation from The Creator. The God breathed spirit of humanity dies by asphyxiation.

However, God, in His loving mercy and kindness, does not cut off all avenues of unity. Within the seed of humanity, the dormant egg planted in woman, Life still has its ability. The seed, waiting for germination, the entrance of a life initiating moment. Not only the creaturely seed of humanity, but also the spiritual seed of “The Created Image of God”.

The enmity between the seed of the deceiving serpent and the Seed of the spirit of humanity as created to be by God (see Genesis 3:14).

In human birth, the infant receives all of its nourishment from the mother, including the “air/oxygen” it requires. Though is does not yet draw a breath with its own lungs, the “air/oxygen” is supplied by the mother. The infant is dependent on the life of the mother to live. Should the mother die, the infant quickly follows suit. Much like Adam in the garden, when the relationship between the living God and the dependent Adam was severed by Adam’s looking away from God and to the creation, the God-Breathed Spirit of Adam died leaving only that of the creaturely remnant of the worldly air breathing animals.

I cannot go on without noting the original thought.....

The praises out of humanity that glorify God can only come from an expelling of breath and vocalization that is consciously willed to magnify the glory of God. The dead husk of the germinated Seed of Christ is the death of the human dependence on this worldly supply for living in exchange for the spiritual dependence on God for that first God-Breathed life. In short, the only praise that can glorify God comes from Only Begotten Son of God alive in the heart of humanity, living and breathing the life of God.
